Mustapha BrimaHaving survived a difficult childhood that required him to steal to support himself and his aunt, Mustapha Brima now is a young man that believes he can serve as a positive example to youth in his country by sharing with them the skills that he learned to put himself on a positive track to his future. He works as a WeOwnTV mentor to teach young people new technologies and give them confidence in their self-expression.

Introducing Franklyn M'Cormack

Franklyn M'CormackMeet WeOwnTV's Franklyn M'Cormack. Frank is a wonderfully warm individual who joined the team as a mentor summer 2010. He is a passionate and gifted actor. Frank is also spearheading the 'Le Wi Lan Krio' initiative. ‘Le Wi Lan Krio’ is a series of short, upbeat Krio-language lessons produced for online distribution. Each clip is both a lesson in Krio language and culture, often taught through the use of Sierra Leonean proverbs and stories.

Introducing Michaella Sallu

Introducing Fanta Jabbie

At 13, she returned from the war to the ruins of Kono and desperately turned to prostitution for survival by establishing a prostitution group with friends, “The American Girls Club.” No longer wanting to depend on “bad habits” and hoping for a better life for her daughter, she is committed to improving her life through education and opportunity.

Introducing Yeali Thoronka

Eventually the war would mean the death of both of her parents, leaving her and her sister (Kanku Thoronka) to fend for themselves. Optimistic that “Our Own TV” can unite the community and create positive change, Yeali believes being part of the program will transform her life.

He describes the pride his village takes in sharing in the filmmaking process.

Introducing Kanku Thoronka

Having escaped the war and having lived as a refugee in Guinea, she returned to Sierra Leone finding dramatic change. Finding hope in education she is beginning to write a new life chapter.

Introducing Alluspa

Suddenly crippled as a child without the use of his legs, Alluspa describes the happiest day of his life—“the time when I found myself on crutches.” Determined to not let his disability define him, Alluspa is a passionate advocate of community theater and storytelling. He believes through stories people are able to escape and imagine different outcomes than those they have experienced. As a result, they have the potential to better understand and to forgive.
