WeOwnTV: Sierra Leone

With the idea that no one is more qualified to tell the story of Sierra Leone than Sierra Leoneans themselves, WeOwnTV debuted in 2009 facilitating a month-long filmmaking workshop for 18 young men and women in Freetown, the country’s capital. As a result, the young filmmakers below are creating new works to share with you. In July 2010, fueled and inspired by these young collaborators, the doors of the WeOwnTV Sierra Leone Media Center opened to provide a space to meet, create, procure professional work and to continue their education.

Having survived a difficult childhood that required him to steal to support himself and his aunt, Mustapha Brima now is a young man that believes he can serve as a positive example to youth in his country by sharing with them the skills that he learned to put himself on a positive track to his future. He works as a WeOwnTV mentor to teach young people new technologies and give them confidence in their self-expression. more »

Introducing Franklyn M'Cormack

Meet WeOwnTV's Franklyn M'Cormack. Frank is a wonderfully warm individual who joined the team as a mentor summer 2010. He is a passionate and gifted actor. Frank is also spearheading the 'Le Wi Lan Krio' initiative. ‘Le Wi Lan Krio’ is a series of short, upbeat Krio-language lessons produced for online distribution. Each clip is both a lesson in Krio language and culture, often taught through the use of Sierra Leonean proverbs and stories. more »
