Introducing Fanta Jabbie

Fanta JabbieMeet WeOwnTV youth filmmaker Fanta Jabbie. From her home in Small Seffadu Village, Kono she shares her history and introduces her family, including her young daughter. At 13, she returned from the war to the ruins of Kono and desperately turned to prostitution for survival by establishing a prostitution group with friends, “The American Girls Club.” No longer wanting to depend on “bad habits” and hoping for a better life for her daughter, she is committed to improving her life through education and opportunity.

A Workshop Changes Everything

a WeOwnTV CollaborationBlack Nature introduces WeOwnTV and the inspiration for its creation. The video follows the team traveling to Sierra Leone in early 2009 for a scouting trip to select collaborators for an upcoming filmmaking workshop. The team met a wide range of participants from young media professionals and students to ex-combatants, street kids and child prostitutes. The trip concluded with the selection of 18 young women and men to take part in the program, excited to learn and thrilled with the opportunity these new skills will represent in their lives. Included are highlights from their interviews.

Introducing Kanku Thoronka

Having escaped the war and having lived as a refugee in Guinea, she returned to Sierra Leone finding dramatic change. With her home and country destroyed, and her family dead she turned to prostitution for survival. Without a foundation to build from, she and her peers were unsure of how to create a future. Finding hope in education she is beginning to write a new life chapter.

Introducing Hanna Jimmy

She explains that although her home, the Kono district, is the leading supplier of materials—diamonds—support for education is neglected and they are ranked last in the country. Closing with a song, she sings; “Where will I be when the trumpet sounds;” alluding to the hope that new opportunity will enable her to be of greater value and service.

Introducing Mariama Bah

She believes if she commits to her education and to moving beyond the hurts of war, her opportunities will be limitless. Having lost her mother to sickness and her father to rebel violence, young Mariama was left to fend for her survival and turned to prostitution. Recognizing the dangers she pulled away and dedicated herself to improving her life through education.
