Quoting Arthur Pratt, WeOwnTV: Sierra Leone manager, "We the loose ends, the have nots, the people living in the gutters, the people who will never make it in life, we have come together to create our own family, to have own identity—to create our own space." Serving as inspiration, the footage represents a collection of standout quotes, interviews and creations from the young filmmakers that began to create their own space during the August 2009 WeOwnTV Intro to Filmmaking workshop.

Meet WeOwnTV youth filmmaker Tyson. In this introduction interview with the WeOwnTV team, Tyson outlines the epic filmmaking endeavor he accomplished in his village. First, he convinces his neighbors to “invest” in the production; then he writes a village movie, centered on culture and custom; and finally he directs the art production—traditional African dress—and the filming of a feature-length narrative film. He describes the pride his village takes in sharing in the filmmaking process.

Meet WeOwnTV community liaison and mentor Mohamed Alie Kanu. Mohamed articulates the frustration of his county’s people as they are faced with poverty and lack of opportunity. Passionately describing their desire to learn and contribute, he shares the challenges that they are facing. A job shortage continues to be challenging for families to be comfortable and productive when faced with such obstacles.
